Wings of Love Bereavement Program

In 2014, Ronald McDonald House Charities® of Memphis created the Wings of Love bereavement program to provide support to Ronald McDonald House families whose children lose their battle to cancer. Understanding that the time spent at Ronald McDonald House of Memphis is a special time in a family’s journey through pediatric cancer, the Wings of Love program provides support for families – beyond a roof over their heads – during an emotionally challenging time in their lives.

Families receive a beautiful wind chime engraved with their child’s name and the inscription: “When the wind blows, know that I am near.” These chimes serve as a special reminder of a family’s time spent together in Memphis at Ronald McDonald House during a very difficult time.

“Thank you for the beautiful remembrance in honor of our son,” a mother wrote in a letter after she received their wind chime. “Every time we hear it ring we will remember the good times we spent at Ronald McDonald House of Memphis.”

In addition to the memorial wind chime, Ronald McDonald House of Memphis may also provide a small financial gift to families that need assistance with burial expenses.

The staff works closely with the social work team at St. Jude to identify the families that need the additional support. “Every time I send a wind chime to a family that has lost their child, I take a few minutes to remember that child while acknowledging the tremendous loss that it is,” said Sherri Maxey, Director of House Operations. “I think about and remember all the fun times we had while they stayed at their ‘home-away-from-home. The response from the families has been very positive and they are always thankful that we remember their child with this small gift.”
